I returned from my own trip to Athens and Istanbul yesterday. I'd recommend some form of insurance, just in case. However, if you are a student, look into getting an ISIC card. It has most of the basic coverage that you'd need and it is only $25. In addition to the insurance, it is also a discount card. I got 60% off a 4 star hotel in Istanbul, and get half-price admission to many archaeological sites in Greece and cheaper internet cafe rates. If you need more insurance than just basic (which probably won't be necessary), call STA Travel, and they can hook you up for about $125.

Check and see if your own health insurance would cover you if you travel. Chances are it will.

Of course you need international health insurance. What happens if you get hurt there? No one will take care of you if you don't have insurance. As they say, better safe than sorry.

It's not mandatory, I believe, but makes good sense to be protected just in case of illness or accidents. It's an expensive trip, and you don't need to add any more to that cost.
Besides it will give you peace of mind, just knowing you are protected.

If you are healthy, without any specific health problem and you visit Athens and Istanbul (ancient Byzantion - from her founder Byzas, from Megara, just outside of Athens) in the summer time, there is nothing wrong around here! Just enjoy your vacations! Make friends, see places (those cities were the capitals of the world some time: New Rome, from the forth to the 19th century. Athens, was and still is the intellectual and cradle of philosophy, sciences, arts, etc.!)

Absolutely! If you have an accident or fall ill on route, it can cost you Thousands of $$$.
Be safe & secure knowing you are covered by taking out a holiday insurance policy before you go. Have a nice trip.
